SUMMARY:Mayday Bingo
DESCRIPTION:[Note: We listened to the objections and worries in relation to our original Mayday Bingo callout and in response we have amended it\, got rid of the competition element and added clarifications and advice. Please let us know if you have ant further misgivings or comments\, as we are all in the process of learning from each other and working to improve.] \nThis Mayday\, to get us all back into the habit of going out into the great outdoors and doing cool shit again\, – but also to remind us all how we can achieve more if we all work together – we are issuing an open challenge to participate in our Mayday Bingo. What better way is there to anticipate the easing of lockdown than by participating in a bit of friendly competitive activism while having fun? \nThe main aim of the game is for us all to win collectively. We do that by everyone contributing towards crossing out the targets on the bingo card. \nIn order to give everyone a nice big heads up and plenty of time to plot and carry out your actions\, the game will run from the 1st to the 15th of May. To mark the end of the game\, we’ll post a sexy meme on 15th May as a thank you to all participants. \nParticipating\nIf you’d like to play\, you could use our bingo card to run a game in your city or just with your affinity group or a couple of friends! Feel free to cross out boxes on the card\, share it amongst comrades\, or post it online if that’s safe. \n While we are not encouraging anyone to choose the illegal actions from the list\, this is a good resource to inspire you. \nhttps://greenanticapitalist.org/how-to-fluffy-anarchist-basics/ \nhttps://greenanticapitalist.org/how-to-fluffy-anarchist-basics-2/ \nYour actions can be completely legal\nRemember\, not all actions are illegal! \n\nOrganising a freeshop is an action against waste.\nHanding out anti-fascist literature is an action against fascism.\nOffering childcare so comrades with kids can go to a demo or organising meeting is a great action against any of our targets.\nPersuading your neighbours to switch to a more ethical energy supplier could be an action against nuclear energy.\nPublishing an article in your student newspaper can be an action.\n\nSharing your actions or crossed out bingo boards\nIf you’re keen to share a particularly fun action with the world but don’t want to put it on your own account\, we’d be happy to share it on ours! You can email us at greenanticapitalistfront@riseup.net. \nBelow is some advice for safely sending us your report or photo. Remember to never send us (or anyone) evidence of a crime unless you’re confident it can’t get you in trouble! And let us know if/how you’d like to be credited! \nHow to report actions without incriminating yourself 101\nIf you want to share any of your actions with us\, especially if it’s anything illegal\, here’s some advice to make that safer: \n\nIf you’re going to take photos\, wait until you’re confident you’ve gotten away with it.\nPreferably\, don’t be in the photo. If you must be\, make sure you’re heavily disguised.\nDon’t report until you’re safe and far away from the site of the action.\nRemove metadata from photos and blur out any faces\, identifiable clothes\, tattoos\, etc.\nUse a secure email\, a VPN\, and TOR browser.\nUse a pseudonym.\n\nStay safe\, have fun

SUMMARY:The Green Anticapitalist Front does Lockdown – Livestream: Interview with Gran Canaria’s Anarchist Federation
DESCRIPTION:GAF is reacting to the Covid-19 lockdown and enforced social distancing\, by moving online. We are doing a series of livestreams about a variety of subjects and groups that we hope will provide food for constructive discussion and inspiration for action. \nEpisode 14: Interview with Gran Canaria’s Anarchist Federation \nIn this episode of GAF does Lockdown we’ll be interviewing a member of FAGC (Federación Anarquistas Gran Canaria or Gran Canaria’s Anarchist Federation)\, which centres most of its activity on the issues of housing\, rent and homelessness. They are known for starting the Sindicato de Inquilinas de Gran Canaria (Gran Canaria’s Renter’s Union) which has been housing homeless people in squatted buildings run along anarchists’ principles. The biggest one so far\, La Esperanza\, houses more than 260 people\, around 160 of them minors. \nWe’ll be asking them about the origins of the project\, the challenges they’ve faced over the years and the lessons they’ve learned on how we can build autonomous projects that “bring anarchism to the non-anarchists”. \nYou can read about some of their ideas on this translated article: https://theanarchistlibrary.org/library/ruyman-rodriguez-street-anarchy?v=1598313600 \nAnd learn about La Esperanza project on this documentary (eng subtitles available): https://kolektiva.media/videos/watch/21e32246-2afa-42d9-a70a-c5d16c7cc9ba \nLink to video-conference to participate in discussion and ask questions: \n\nDiscussion internet link:\n\nhttps://ca.meet.coop/b/gre-pqi-ku6-8fw\n\n\n\n\nInternet link to just listen to audio:\n\nhttp://www.twitch.com/gaf_london\n\n\n\nNotice: These livestreams will be recorded so they can be shared on our website for everyone who missed them. Please beware of this when following in video-conference link. \nEvent times are set at GMT (Greenwich Mean Time)\, the time zone being UTC. \nAccessibility \nTwitch offers automated closed captions\, although the quality of the transcription can be quite low at times. We also publish a recording of each livestream on the GAF Youtube channel after the event\, and Youtube closed captions tend to be more reliable. It may take us a few days to upload the recording to Youtube\, but if you’re keen to see it sooner\, do get in touch\, and we may be able to prioritise this.

SUMMARY:The Green Anticapitalist Front does Lockdown – Livestream: Interview with Stay Grounded
DESCRIPTION:GAF is reacting to the Covid-19 lockdown and enforced social distancing\, by moving online. We are doing a series of livestreams about a variety of subjects and groups that we hope will provide food for constructive discussion and inspiration for action. \nEpisode 13: Interview with Stay Grounded \nStay Grounded is a global network of more than 160 member organisations\, among them local airport opposition and climate justice groups\, NGOs\, trade unions\, initiatives fostering alternatives to aviation like night trains\, and organisations supporting communities which struggle against offset projects or biofuel plantations\, as well as individual activists\, academics and trade unionists. \nStay Grounded aims to exchange experiences\, support each other\, and campaign together for a reduction of aviation and its negative impacts. They also engage in fighting problematic climate strategies like offsetting emissions and biofuels. With the new discussions on aviation and its environmental impact brought on by the global pandemic as well as the new court decision on the Heathrow Expansion\, Stay Grounded’s campaign is even more relevant that ever before. \nLink to video-conference to participate in discussion and ask questions: \n\nDiscussion internet link:\n\nhttps://zoom.us/j/94912049871?pwd=KzF5UFZVeXFFMENsc0MwT1ZGdXBrQT09\nMeeting ID: 949 1204 9871\nPasscode: 713180\n\n\n\n\nTelephone dial in by your location:\n\n        +43 72 011 5988 Austria\n        +43 120 609 3072 Austria\n        +43 12 535 501 Austria\n        +43 12 535 502 Austria\n        +43 670 309 0165 Austria\n        +44 208 080 6592 United Kingdom\n        +44 330 088 5830 United Kingdom\n        +44 131 460 1196 United Kingdom\n        +44 203 481 5237 United Kingdom\n        +44 203 481 5240 United Kingdom\n        +44 203 901 7895 United Kingdom\n        +44 208 080 6591 United Kingdom\n        +1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n        +1 646 558 8656 US (New York)\n        +1 669 900 9128 US (San Jose)\n        +1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n        +1 301 715 8592 US (Washington D.C)\n        +1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\n        +49 69 3807 9883 Germany\n        +49 695 050 2596 Germany\n        +49 69 7104 9922 Germany\n        +49 30 5679 5800 Germany\nMeeting ID: 949 1204 9871\nPasscode: 713180\nFind your local number: https://zoom.us/u/af3520LWW\n\n\n(As an exception we will be using zoom for this livestream)\n\n\nInternet link to just listen to audio:\n\nhttp://www.twitch.com/gaf_london\n\n\n\nNotice: These livestreams will be recorded so they can be shared on our website for everyone who missed them. SUMMARY:GAF Film night discusses: Permaculture
DESCRIPTION:We are trying to emulate our pre-Covid film nights only on an online platform instead\, by streaming one or two short films (coming to a combined running time 30 minutes maximum because we realise online streaming is not the same as in person film showings) followed by a free flowing discussion on the themes of the films and our thoughts and reactions. \nFor our second screening we have chosen the theme of permaculture and will be showing the following two shorts: \nWhat is Permaculture? (And Why Should I Care?) (2017 – 5min): A quick look at the concepts of Permaculture. I try to define what it is\, and then get at why Permaculture is important for a world that is facing a rapidly changing climate. \nJean’s Garden: A Permaculture Documentary (2012 – 38min): A young man attempts to design and grow a permaculture garden in Western Massachusetts. He transforms as he then takes his initiative to Haiti to teach children concepts in systems theory. \nJoin Meeting\nEvent times are set at BST (British Summer Time)\, the time zone being UTC+1.

SUMMARY:The Green Anticapitalist Front does Lockdown – Livestream: Interview with Fuel Poverty Action
DESCRIPTION:GAF is reacting to the Covid-19 lockdown and enforced social distancing\, by moving online. We are doing a series of lifestreams about a variety of subjects and groups that we hope will provide food for constructive discussion and inspiration for action. \nEpisode 12: Interview with Fuel Poverty Action \nFuel Poverty Action is a group of ordinary people fed up with being robbed by greedy energy companies through spiralling bills\, and rip-off prepayment meters. Alongside pensioners groups\, disabled campaigners\, and others on the frontline of fuel poverty\, they are using protest and direct action to fight for real solutions to the cold homes crisis. They take action for warm\, well-insulated homes and clean and affordable energy\, under the control of people and communities\, not private companies. \nAs we move into the long cold winter with so many people hit by loss of income\, working from home and the closure of many social centres and public services that used to offer people a respite from their cold homes due to the pandemic\, campaigns such as these become even more essential. \nLink to video-conference to participate in discussion and ask questions: \n\nDiscussion internet link:\n\nhttps://ca.meet.coop/b/gre-pqi-ku6-8fw\n(We have changed digital conference platform and are no longer using Zoom\, clicking on the link above will take you to our new platform. SUMMARY:GAF does Lockdown – Interview with Peter Gelderloos on The Dangers of Non-Violence in the Environmental Movement
DESCRIPTION:GAF is reacting to the Covid-19 lockdown and enforced social distancing\, by moving online. We are doing a series of livestreams about a variety of subjects and groups that we hope will provide food for constructive discussion and inspiration for action. \nEpisode 11: Interview with Peter Gelderloos on The Dangers of Non-Violence in the Environmentalist Movement\n \nPeter Gelderloos is an anarchist activist and writer who for years has been talking about the dangers of the non-violent doctrine in social movements and advocating for a diversity of tactics as necessary for achieving meaningful social change. Today many movements around the world have learnt this lesson and\, despise the eventual recuperation of most of them\, uprisings and protests in places like Chile\, Hong-Kong and Minneapolis have shown the importance of allowing multiple strategies to be used and rejecting the narratives used by the media and the elites to separate us. Still new generations in the environmentalist movement have been convinced that a rigid adherence to non-violence is the only way forward. That’s why we are gonna talk with Peter to challenge these ideas and offer an alternative perspective on the discussion between non-violence and diversity of tactics. \nLink to video-conference to participate in discussion and ask questions: \n\nDiscussion internet link:\n\nhttps://ca.meet.coop/b/gre-pqi-ku6-8fw\n(Please make sure you click the mic button to mute yourself when joining the conference. SUMMARY:GAF Film Club discusses: Social reproduction and solidarity economy
DESCRIPTION:Over the past months we put together a lot of reading lists and had a lot of reading group discussions. An introduction by Plan C (2015 – 4min): A short introduction to the idea of social reproduction and what it means for those organising in\, against and beyond capitalism. \nSolidarities\, Feminisms and Social Reproduction – Bubbling up (2018 – 23min): A feminist analysis of social and economic practices in Latin America and India and the changes wrought by the creation of solidarity economies and the recognition of social reproduction work. \nJoin Meeting\nEvent times are set at BST (British Summer Time)\, the time zone being UTC+1.

SUMMARY:GAF does Bookfair 2020: Green Solidarity - Learning from the GRASS experience
DESCRIPTION:The Anarchist Bookfair is back! Unfortunately due to Covid it is going to be an online event. We will be hosting a virtual stall\, but also a workshop. \nWorkshop: Green Solidarity – Learning from the GRASS experience\nAt the end of February 2020 individuals organising under the GAF banner squatted the The George pub near Holloway Road. Initially it was used to host talks\, workshops and all kinds of events as part of the GAF Week of Action that was taking place at the time. Afterwards\, it was kept open as a social centre with regular events. Under normal circumstances\, the building would have most likely been evicted only a few weeks after. But instead the pandemic happened\, evictions were postponed and the people living there found themselves in a privileged position to respond to it by organising with the local mutual aid networks that were appearing all over the country.  By doing this\, they were able to put their ideals to test and get a glimpse of what autonomous community spaces can offer to the British left. \nWe will look at the inspirations for the GRASS projects\, the circumstances that made it possible\, the lessons learns from its achievements and mistakes and then give the space for everyone to discuss how these can be applied to new projects in the future. \nLink to video-conference to participate in discussion and ask questions:\n\nDiscussion internet link:\n\nhttps://ca.meet.coop/b/gre-pqi-ku6-8fw\n\n\nInternet link to just listen to audio:\n\nhttp://www.twitch.com/gaf_london\n\n\n\nNotice: We record our livestreams so they can be shared on our website for everyone who missed them. Please beware of this when following in video-conference link. \nEvent times are set at BST (British Summer Time)\, the time zone being UTC+1. \nAccessibility\nTwitch offers automated closed captions\, although the quality of the transcription can be quite low at times.

SUMMARY:GAF Lockdown Reading Group discusses: The Commons\, the building blocks for a society beyond capitalism?
DESCRIPTION:Our aim with these meetings is to discuss different subjects each time so it is not necessary to have joined a previous session to participate. Before each meeting we will share a variety of readings of different lengths to give some background information on the subject to be discussed. Participants are invited to pick and choose what they would like to read in preparation. No prior knowledge of any of the subjects is necessary as our aim is to make these events as inclusive and broad as possible. \nIn this reading group we will be discussing the commons\, how we have experienced them and what opportunities they offer to build a new society. The commons is a very broad term\, that has become even broader with the inclusion of the digital commons and all the other facets of the “new” commons. According to Italian commons activist Giovanna Ricoveri “The commons are goods or means of subsistence which are not commodities\, and therefore they constitute a social arrangement that is the complete opposite of the one created by the market economy” and according to Charlotte Hess “the vision more broadly involves people working together\, cooperatively\, to build methods of production\, service provision\, and exchange which create value and well-being while integrating ecological care\, justice\, and long-term planning to the best of diverse communities’ abilities.” Join us as we find out more about them. \nQuestions\n\nCan you give an example of commons that you have experienced or been part of? What did it offer you? How did it affect your quality of life and sense of community?\nWhat makes a well-managed commons\, thus avoiding the “tragedy of the commons”? What skills are needed and what kind of community relationships?\nHow are the commons linked to reproductive labour and subsistence living? Do you think they can be a means of creating a new collective paradigm of living and subverting capitalism?\nWhat opportunities do you see in your community or neighbourhood to reclaim commons or set up new commons? How would you go about doing it?\n\nWe would like to remind you that you don’t need to do all the readings\, just pick and choose the ones you want to do. We would highly recommend doing as much of the reading as you are up to in preparation. \nReading\nBasic Reading\n\nVIDEO The Commons – Anarchist Collective (36mins)\n\nA basic intro on what the commons are and how they differ from private property and public property.\n\n\nVIDEO The Struggle for the Commons by Silvia Federici (2011) (14mins)\n\nFacing mass unemployment\, precarisation\, evictions and cuts in social services\, more and more people in the US and other parts of the world are reconquering public spaces in order to create new forms of production and reproduction: the Commons.\n\n\nVIDEO The Commons movement in Italy: interview with Ugo Mattei (2013) (13mins) *\n\nOverview of the fight of returning public utilities and production of goods to common ownership in Italy from private hands\, using the example of the Water Company in Naples.\n\n\nTEXT Taking Back Ownership – Transforming Capital into Commons: interview with Molly Scott Cato and Ugo Mattei (2016) (easy read)\n\nDiscussion on the commons in contemporary society\, if they can coexist with capitalism and how they can relate to the institution of the EU.\n\n\nTEXT Elinor Ostrom’s 8 Principles for Managing A Commons (2011) (very short read)\n\nListing of the 8 principles Elinor Ostrom ascertained are necessary to succefully manage a commons in refutation of Garrett Hardin’s Tragedy of the Commons.\n\n\nVIDEO Sustainable development and the tragedy of commons by Elinor Ostrom (8.30mins)\n\nBrief overview of Elinor Ostrom’s work in debunking Garrett Hardin’s Tragedy of the Commons.\n\n\nTEXT Defending\, Reclaiming and Reinventing the Commons by Maria Mies & Veronika Benholdt-Thomsen (2014) *\n\nDiscusses how the privatisation of the commons destroys communities\, pauperises populations and damages the environment and makes the link between the enclosure of the commons with the “enclosure” of reproductive labour by the domestication of women.\n\n\nTEXT Feminism and the politics of the commons by Silvia Federici (2011) *\n\nDiscusses the link between reclaiming the commons and re-commoning reproductive labour as the way towards rebuilding a self-sufficient collective society.\n\n\n\nAdvanced Reading\n\nTEXT The New Enclosures: Midnight Notes Collective issue 10 (1990)\n\nIntroduction pp1-9\n\nOverview of the strengthening of international capitalism via the new enclosures of the 1980s and 1990s and the changes to the international working class’s conditions.\n\n\nThe dept crisis\, Africa and the new enclosures pp10-17\n\nHow the African depth crisis of the 1980s was used to enclose and privatise the common land in Africa and enforce structures of free market economy on the continent.\n\n\n\n\nTEXT Commonism by Nick Dyer-Witheford in Turbulence 1 (2007)\n\nDiscusses the circulation of commons and the conditions they would create for new collective projects and waves of organising.\n\n\nVIDEO Management of Natural Commons by Joshua Farley and Ugo Mattei (2013) (35mins)\n\nAn investigation into the practicalities of managing the commons and creating new commons with capitalist society.\n\n\nTEXT Ecofeminism\, Commons\, and Climate Justice by Patricia E. SUMMARY:GAF Lockdown Reading Group discusses: Police Abolition
DESCRIPTION:Our aim with these meetings is to discuss different subjects each time so it is not necessary to have joined a previous session to participate. Before each meeting we will share a variety of readings of different lengths and types to give some background information on the subject to be discussed. Participants are invited to pick and choose what they would like to read in preparation. No prior knowledge of any of the subjects is necessary as our aim is to make these events as inclusive and broad as possible. \nJust like a lot of people we have been in favour of police abolition for a long time\, but the renewed public interest in the subject has made us want to read up more about it. \nJoin us as we discuss the questions:\n\nWhat issues do you think are the most prominent in modern policing and what motivates you personally and politically to be an abolitionist?\nHow can leftists aid the police abolition movement on a wider scale?\nWhat are the most common arguments that abolitionists will face\, and what answers do we have to those arguments?\nWhat’s the police abolition answer to extreme ‘criminal’ violence such as murder\, and the archetypal ‘psychopath’? How would incidents of domestic/sexual/misogynist violence be dealt with without the police?\nWhat behaviours can we adopt on a day to day basis to tackle police injustice?\n\nWe would like to remind you that you don’t need to do all the readings\, just pick and choose the ones you want to do. We would highly recommend doing as much of the reading as you are up to in preparation. \nReadings\nBasic Readings:\n\nTEXT Are Prisons Obsolete – Chapter 1\, Introduction: Prison Reform or Prison Abolition? (p. 9-22) – Angela Y. Davis.\n\nAn introduction to prison abolition examining how prisons have become a normalised part of society and how this happened. Asks the fundamental question: why do we take prison for granted?\n\n\nTEXT The Lockdown: the End of Policing – Podcast interview – Novara\n\nPodcast with Alex S. Vitale\, author of The End of Policing\, discussing how the police exacerbate social problems and what alternatives might look like.\n\n\nTEXT Alternatives to Police – 27 pages\, but not a difficult read – Rose City Copwatch\n\nReport by Rose City Copwatch on alternatives to policing. Quite long but does not use academic language\, and goes through a good number of solid\, practical\, currently operating alternatives to the police.\n\n\nTEXT Abolish the police? Organisers say it’s less crazy than it sounds. – Medium length article – Maya Dukmasova\n\nMedium length article with a hopeful tone which points out how many behaviours are already abolitionist and addresses skepticism towards the movement. An excellent starting point.\n\n\nVIDEO What’s Wrong with Community Control of Police? – Short video\, 5 minutes – Kamau Walton\n\nA short video addressing in a succinct way the issues with policing\, and why community policing is needed. Also addresses abolition as a necessity for community control of systems other than the justice system.\n\n\nTEXT Filthbusters! A zine on alternatives to calling the police – short zine\, very easy to read – Filthbusters Collective\n\nShort and colourful zine with practical ideas on alternatives to calling the police. Resources like links to groups are tailored to Hackney (London) but the ideas can be applied in many places.\n\n\n\nFurther Readings:\n\nTEXT Prison Solidarity Network Intro Pack – 10 pages – Prison Solidarity Network.\n\nExcellent digestible introduction to ideas around prison solidarity\, and the abolition of the criminal ‘justice’ system and the carceral state. Also a good introduction to the Prison Solidarity Network.\n\n\nTEXT Police “Reforms” You Should Always Oppose – 1 short page – Mariame Kaba.\n\nA very short and readable list of police reforms that must always be opposed and why\, with an alternative list of reforms that should be supported in the interim.\n\n\nTEXT Building a police free future: frequently asked questions – short read zine\, 8 pages with big text – MPD150\n\nAn easily digestible zine answering in simple language some frequently asked questions about police abolition.\n\n\nTEXT What would abolishing police powers in the UK look like? – Short newspaper article – Metro\n\nObviously the Metro sucks\, but this article is a solid\, recently penned introduction to the arguments around police abolition in the UK specifically.\n\n\nTEXT Police Abolition and other revolutionary lessons from Rojava – Fairly short article – Hawzhin Azeez\n\nRecent article exploring the alternatives to policing that are practiced in the Kurdish autonomous region of Rojava.\n\n\nTEXT Zapatistas – Lessons in community self-organisation in Mexico – medium-short article – Anya Briy\n\nArticle looking at Zapatista self-organisation in Chiapas\, Mexico. Examines how the Zapatistas self-organise in the realms of justice\, education\, health and more. Written recently with the context of police abolition in mind.\n\n\nVIDEO Prison Abolition 101: Online panel discussion – 2 hour panel discussion – Community Action on Prison Expansion\n\nUK focused panel discussion on prison abolition\, bringing together a broad range of activists and academics.\n\n\n\nJoin Meeting\n(We have changed digital conference platform and are no longer using zoom\, clicking on the link above will take you to our new platform that is powered by Big Blue Button. SUMMARY:GAF Lockdown Reading Group discusses: Braiding Sweetgrass
\nFor thousands of years communities lived in reciprocity with nature\, caring for the land as it cared for them\, until imperialist forces sought to take that land for themselves. Now that capitalism\, a uniquely extractive mode of economic organisation\, has come to dominate the world\, what can we learn from the wisdom of indigenous peoples in our shared struggle against environmental collapse? \nFor this session we will be doing things a little differently as we will be concentrating on one book:  Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom\, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer. \nJoin us as we discuss the questions:\n\nWhat might a post-capitalist gift economy look like? (see ‘Gifts’ theme below)\nHow can we apply indigenous wisdom to our own projects and to new environments? (see ‘Wisdom’ theme below)\nHow can we live in reciprocity with nature in our individual lives and in our collective efforts? (see ‘Reciprocity and Gratitude’ theme below)\nHow do language and grammar shape the way we think about the world? (see ‘Language’ theme below)\n\nWe would like to remind you that you don’t need to do all the readings\, just pick and choose the ones you want to do. We would highly recommend doing as much of the reading as you are up to in preparation. \nReadings\nMain book:\nLink to Ebook and pdf \nThe chapters of the first half of the book have been grouped by theme to make it easier for the reader to explore the topics of most interest to them. The chapters are relatively short (except The Honourable Harvest\, which is substantially longer) and standalone. \n\nGifts\n\nThe Gift of Strawberries\nMaple Sugar Moon\nEpiphany in the Beans\n\n\nWisdom\n\nThe Council of Pecans\nAsters and Goldenrod\nThe Three Sisters\nMishkos Kenomagwen: The Teachings of Grass\n\n\nReciprocity and Gratitude\n\nAn Offering\nAllegiance to Gratitude\nWisgaak Gokpenagen: A Black Ash Basket\nThe Honourable Harvest (this chapter is a lot longer than the others but covers many topics)\n\n\nMotherhood\n\nWitch Hazel\nA Mother’s Work\nThe Consolation of Water Lilies\n\n\nLanguage\n\nLearning the Grammar of Animacy\n\n\n\nAudio Lectures:\n\nReclaiming The Honourable Harvest\nThe Teachings of Plants: Finding Common Ground Between Traditional and Scientific Knowledge\n\nJoin Meeting\n(We have changed digital conference platform and are no longer using zoom\, clicking on the link above will take you to our new platform that is powered by Big Blue Button. SUMMARY:The Green Anticapitalist Front does Lockdown – Livestream: Tactics against Repression and Co-optation of Mutual Aid
DESCRIPTION:GAF is reacting to the Covid-19 lockdown and enforced social distancing\, by moving online. We will be doing a series of lifestreams about a variety of subjects that we hope will provide food for constructive discussion. \nEpisode 7: Tactics against Repression and Co-optation of Mutual Aid\nIn the livestream our guest speaker will draw on 5 years’ research into Mutual Aid Disaster Relief\, including interviews with activists involved with Occupy Sandy in New York\, and COVID-19 Mutual Aid groups in London. The talk will introduce some of the political theories underlying state policies which have both explicitly and implicitly attempted to repress\, deradicalize and co-opt mutual aid movements. It will consider some of the ways in which movements and activists have been co-opted\, for example through becoming regulated and bureaucratized as official NGOs\, and will also consider ways in which they have successfully resisted co-optation and de-radicalization. The talk will hopefully form the basis of a participatory discussion on whether some of these points resonate with the personal experiences of people present on the call\, any experiences they may have had that weren’t covered\, and how they might be able to take some of these ideas forward in their own actions. \nLink to video-conference to participate in discussion and ask questions:\n\nDiscussion internet link:\n\nBig Blue Button\n(We have changed digital conference platform and are no longer using zoom\, clicking on the link above will take you to our new platform. SUMMARY:GAF Lockdown reading group discusses: ecofeminism
\nIn this reading group session we will be discussing ecofeminism and what we can learn from it. Ecofeminism as a term and discipline in feminism was used mainly in the 1980s and 1990s. In the 1990s it fell out of use due to backlash from the mainstream feminism of the time that falsely accused its proponents of being essentialists and didn’t consider environmentalism relevant to the feminist movement. In order to continue to be read and published many ecofeminists after that time stopped using the term ecofeminism\, while still continuing to write about the same themes\, broadening them even more. \nJoin us as we discuss the questions:\n\nWhat is the relationship between patriarchy and colonialism and human domination over nature? How can we change our anthropocentric point of view?\nHow is climate change a gendered issue? What can strands of ecofeminist thought teach us about our solutions to climate change and the ways we should enact them?\nWhat are some examples of gendered language used to describe nature\, and animalised language used to describe women and indigenous peoples? How might this language shape the way we perceive nature\, women and indigenous and minority people?\nIs it possible to return to the model of subsistence production? What practical steps can we take to disassociate human happiness from material consumption?\nWhat critiques would we make of contemporary mainstream environmental ethics and anti-capitalist activism? What messages can we take from ecofeminist writings that could inform our activism?\n\nWe would like to remind you that you don’t need to do all the readings (especially since the list is so large this time)\, just pick and choose the ones you want to do. We would highly recommend doing as much of the reading as you are up to in preparation. We would also recommend picking from both the basic readings and the advanced readings sections. \nPlease note that we do not subscribe completely to all the opinions expressed by the authors of these texts\, but we do consider they offer a useful and fruitful perspective and lend themselves as the basis for an interesting analysis and discussion. Also please take note of the publishing dates of some of these texts as they can use terms that are no longer in use and other contemporary terms we are now used to had not been coined yet\, or were not broadly used yet. \nReadings:\nBasic reading list\n\nVIDEO Defining Ecofeminism with Greta Gaard (2019)\n\nA brief definition of ecofeminism. (7min)\n\n\nVIDEO Ecofeminism Now! by Greta Gaard (1996) (recommended)\n\nEcofeminism Now! weaves together interviews with feminist eco-activists and scholars. These women activists work for environmental justice for women\, animals\, and earth through spiritual and economic-political activism. (37min)\n\n\nTEXT ‘Ecofeminism’: a talk about hard work and great joy – ROAR Magazine (2014) (recommended)\n\nAn interview with Maria Mies about patriarchal capitalism\, subsistence production and ecofeminism.\n\n\nVIDEO PART1 PART2 Gender Justice and Climate Justice: Making the Connections by Greta Gaard (2014) (recommended)\n\nGaard describes 21st-century “anthropocene feminist” responses to climate change\, arguing that a feminist approach to climate change analyses and solutions is necessary in order to tackle the three antifeminist threads associated with the scientific response to climate change: the linked rhetorics of population control\, anti-immigration sentiment\, and increased militarism. (49min +34min)\n\n\nVIDEO Growth = Poverty by Vandana Shiva (Festival of Dangerous Ideas 2013) (recommended)\n\nShiva discusses what is wrong with the GDP and how growth is making us poorer. (60min)\n\n\nTEXT Roots: Black ghetto ecology by Wilmette Brown (1983) [missing page] (recommended)\n\nMaking the links between racism\, sexism\, poverty\, environmentalism and health.\n\n\nTEXT Staying Alive: Women\, Ecology and Survival in India by Vandana Shiva (1988)\n\nCh.4 (pp55-95) Women in the forest (recommended)\n\nAn analysis of the importance of forests for the life and survival of local people in India as well as the preservation of the climate and how that has been threatened by British colonialism\, capitalist development and the privatisation of the commons. An introduction to the inspiring Chipko movement of the Indian hill regions\, the first activist movement to save forests.\n\n\n\n\nTEXT Ecofeminism: Women\, Animals\, Nature ed Greta Gaard (1993)\n\nCh.2 (pp13-59) Ecofeminism: Linking theory and practice by Janis Birkeland (recommended)\n\nIn depth analysis and critique of the various masculinist mainstream (or Manstream) theories of ecological thought and why the only solution is to overthrow all androcentric cultures.\n\n\n\n\n\nFurther reading list\n\nTEXT Patriarchy and accumulation on a world scale by Maria Mies (1986)\n\nCh.3 (pp74-111) Colonization and housewifization\n\nHistorical analysis of how and why women in the global North were housewifized while women (and men) in the global South were colonized and how that has affected their relation to labour and the land.\n\n\nCh.4 (pp112-144) Housewifization International: Women and the new International Division of Labour (recommended)\n\nAnalysis of the contemporary (end of the 20th century) changes made to women’s (and men’s) relationship to labour and consumption as caused by the globalisation of the market and the new needs of the capitalist economy.\n\n\nCh.7 (pp205-235) Towards a feminist perspective of a new society\n\nDescription of the kind of society the author believes we should aim for and a sketch proposal for how it can be achieved.\n\n\n\n\nTEXT Ecofeminism Revisited:Rejecting Essentialism and Re-Placing Species in a Material Feminist Environmentalism by Greta Gaard (2011)\n\nA detailed and in depth analysis of the history of ecofeminism as well as the backlash against it in the 90s that erroneously discredited it. (Useful for finding authors of further reading about specific topics of ecofeminism)\n\n\nVIDEO Ecofeminism and the decolonization of women\, nature and the future by Vandana Shiva (2020)\n\nShiva\, an Indian scholar\, author and environmental activist\, talks about how covid-19 is only a small part of a much larger picture. (53min)\n\n\nVIDEO Ecofeminism as politics by Ariel Salleh (2017) (recommended)\n\nSalleh\, an Australian activist\, theorist and teacher in the field of eco-feminism\, gives a summary of the history of eco-feminism and talks about an integrative understanding of our world\, its multiple processes and crises\, and possibilities for change in the post-development era. (1h23min)\n\n\nTEXT Ecofeminism: Women\, Animals\, Nature ed Greta Gaard (1993)\n\nCh.6 (pp146-166) Questioning Sour Grapes: Ecofeminism and the United Farm Workers Grape Boycott by Ellen O’Loughlin (recommended)\n\nMaking the links between syndicalism and environmentalism and why ecofeminists need to support unions and actions like the UFW grape boycott.\n\n\nCh.11 (pp272-294) A Cross-Cultural Critique of Ecofeminism Huey-li Li\n\nA critique of some of the shortcomings of certain classical ecofeminist theories and their western centeredness.\n\n\n\n\nVIDEO Marxism and ecofeminism by Ariel Salleh (2016)\n\nEcofeminists enjoin the efforts of socialist feminists in the 70s and 80s to situate women’s domestic labour in a Marxist problematic. An ’embodied materialism’ now complements that economic analysis of the space between capital and labour by focusing on the space between labour and nature. This shifts politics from an androcentric to an eco-centric frame. (30min)\n\n\nVIDEO Partnerships with nature by Carolyn Merchant (2006)\n\nAn analysis of our relationship to nature and a proposal for a new partnership with nature. (37min)\n\n\nTEXT The death of nature by Carolyn Merchant (excerpt\, 1980)\n\nAnalysis of how we moved from viewing our world organically and nature as a nurturing mother to viewing it mechanistically and nature as something to be conquered.\n\n\nTEXT The club\, the yoke\, and the leash: what we can learn from the way a culture treats animals by Aviva Cantor (1983)\n\nAn analysis of the ways that and the reasons why the patriarchy exerts violence and domination over animals\, women and minorities.\n\n\nTEXT Staying Alive: Women\, Ecology and Survival in India by Vandana Shiva (1988)\n\nCh. 1 (pp1-13) Development\, Ecology and women\n\nAn analysis of how western patriarchal capitalism and colonisation has led to the impoverishment of the world and the destruction and exploitation of the South.\n\n\n\n\nWhy women will save the planet by Friends of the Earth (2015)\n\nTEXT Women\, conflict and the environment in Somali society by Shukri Haji Ismail Bandare and Fatima Jibrell\n\nInterview with two Somali women who have been at the forefront of environmental activities since the early 1990s for whom the vital role of women and gender equality in environmental protection has been at the core of their work.\n\n\nTEXT From individual to communal rights: empowering women for sustainable use of natural resources by Nidhi Tandon\n\nAn investigation into the eroding base of women’s security and empowerment in rural and informal sectors in some African countries between 2009 and 2014 and what can be done to combat it.\n\n\n\n\n\nRecommendations for future further readings\n\nSilent Spring by Rachel Carson (1962) link [partial book]\nWoman and Nature by Suzan Griffin (1978)\nGyn/Ecology by Mary Daly (1978)\nThe death of nature by Carolyn Merchant (1980) link\nReclaim the Earth by Léonie Caldecott and Stephanie Leland (1983)\nThe rape of the wild by Andree Collard (1989) link1 link2 [partial book]\nBreaking the Boundaries Towards a Feminist\, Green Socialism by Mary Mellor (1992)\nFeminism and the Mastery of Nature by Val Plumwood  (1993)\nEcofeminism by Maria Mies and Vendana Shiva (1993) link\nLavender’s Green? We will be doing a series of lifestreams about a variety of subjects that we hope will provide food for constructive discussion. \nEpisode 4: Getting the bread with Foodhall Project and National Food Service\nIn this livestream episode we hear from friends involved in Foodhall Project (a community kitchen in Sheffield) and the National Food Service (a grassroots network across the UK with an aim of eliminating food insecurity). We will be hearing about the value of social eating spaces\, how Foodhall and the NFS are tackling social isolation and food waste\, and about the mutual aid they are currently involved in. The speakers will also touch on the organising models used within Foodhall and the NFS\, and how the aims of the projects fit into wider environmental and anti-capitalist movements. \nFor the second half of the livestream there will be a Q&A session. \nLink to video-conference to participate in discussion and ask questions:\n\nDiscussion internet link:\n\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/81439985745\nMeeting ID: 814 3998 5745\n\n\nDiscussion telephone link:\n\n+442034815240 & +441314601196 for UK\nMeeting ID: 814 3998 5745\nFor outside the UK find your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kdbUGznIym\n\n\nInternet link to just listen to audio:\n\nhttp://www.twitch.com/gaf_london\n\n\n\nNotice: These livestreams will be recorded so they can be shared on our website for everyone who missed them. SUMMARY:GAF Lockdown Reading Group discusses: Dual power
\nFollowing off of our third livestream\, this reading group discussion will also deal with the topic of dual power. Dual power theorises a distinct and oppositional relationship between the forces of the state/capitalism and the revolutionary forces of oppressed people\, but there is more to it than that. Lets discuss it together. \nJoin us as we discuss the questions:\n\nHow has the conception of dual power changed since the Bolshevik inception in 1917?\nWhat functions could dual power structures fulfil in late-stage capitalist society? What systemic obstacles may impede dual power structures from fulfilling these functions?\nHow do mutual aid networks have the potential to build into dual power structures and transform our relationship with the state?\nIn what ways can dual power be integrated into digital spaces to facilitate real world organising?\nHow can we ensure dual power structures do not reflect and replicate our existing hierarchical structures that we are already used to?\n\nWe would like to remind you that you don’t need to do all the readings\, just pick and choose the ones you want to do. We would recommend that you do at least some of the readings in preparation. We would also recommend picking from both the basic readings and the advanced readings sections. \nWe would also like to apologise for the text heavy reading for this session\, we were unable to find suitable alternatives in audio or video format. \nReadings:\nBasic readings\n\nTEXT – AFed\, (Jan 2015)\, ‘A Short Introduction to Anarchist Communism’\, pp. 24-27.\n\nA brief and accessible introduction to dual power strategy and its potential obstacles\n\n\nTEXT – Kosigan\, I.\, (May 2020)\, ‘Insurrection & Infrastructure: a Dual Power Guide for Leftists in Britain’\n\nExplores different conceptions of dual power and outlines methods for actualising it\n\n\nTEXT – ROAR Collective – Woodbine\, (Mar 2020)\, ‘From mutual aid to dual power in the state of emergency’\n\nA look at how structures of mutual aid and dual power can be developed in response to the Coronavirus crisis\n\n\nTEXT – Morgan\, W.\, (May 2018)\, ‘Building Dual Power: Where They Retreat\, We Must Advance’\n\nExplains how privatisation of essential services can provide openings for building dual power\n\n\nTEXT – Katie\, H.\, (Apr 2020)\, ‘From Mutual Aid to Dual Power: How Do We Build A New World In The Shell Of The Old?’\n\nUses real world examples to explain dual power and how it may be useful in Britain after Covid-19\n\n\nVIDEO – Stimulator (Sub Media TV)\, (Feb 2016) ‘Dual Power’\n\nScott Crow discusses the problems with reformism and posits dual power as a potential solution (6 mins)\n\n\nAUDIO – GAF livestream: Dual power – Infrastructure for insurrection (2020)\n\nPresentation and discussion on the history of dual power and its contemporary interpretations (90 mins)\n\n\n\nFurther readings\n\nTEXT – Kosigan\, I.\, (Jan 2020)\, ‘Social Reproduction and the Goal of Revolutionary Strategy’\n\nApplies the model of social reproduction to revolutionary organising\, specifically in context with dual power and crisis management\n\n\nTEXT – Escalante\, A.\, (Mar 2019)\, ‘Communism and Climate Change: A Dual Power Approach’\n\nArgues that producing and distributing food through dual power structures can provide a path to revolution and a solution to the climate crisis\n\n\nTEXT– Lenin\, V. SUMMARY:The Green Anticapitalist Front does Lockdown – Livestream: Dual power - Infrastructure for insurrection
DESCRIPTION:***NOTICE: Due to unforeseen circumstances this livestream has had to be postponed till Thursday the 14th of May\, at the same time*** \nGAF is reacting to the Covid-19 lockdown and enforced social distancing\, by moving online. We will be doing a series of lifestreams about a variety of subjects that we hope will provide food for constructive discussion. \nEpisode 3: Dual power: Infrastructure for insurrection\nFor this episode we get together for a podcast/livestream discussion with a friend of GAF to talk about Dual Power\, a crucial area of revolutionary politics. The discussion will include the impact of new theories of mutual aid on radical ecological politics\, and the implications of the rise of a new wave of radical organisers in the USA and UK. Topics covered will include: modern writing on the subject of dual power\, the history of how the 20th century guerilla warfare phenomenon has influenced anti-state strategies\, as well the influence of the Black Panthers\, Murray Bookchin\, modern mutual aid movements like Occupy Sandy and the new and wide ranging theoretical debates that started in American communist and anarchist circles over the last several years. \nIn this presentation we will look at what Dual Power is and isn’t\, it’s history and origins in revolutionary political theory\, and how it is being adapted by a new wave of leftists to meet the most imposing challenges\, with particular note for looking at how it could be deployed in the UK\, where it has up till now been ignored as a theory and strategic concept. \nFor the second half of the livestream there will be a Q&A session. \nLink to video-conference to participate in discussion and ask questions:\n\nDiscussion internet link:\n\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/88627601189\nMeeting ID: 886 2760 1189\n\n\nDiscussion telephone link:\n\n+44 203 481 5240 & +44 131 460 1196  for UK\nMeeting ID: 886 2760 1189\nFor outside the UK find your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kdbUGznIym\n\n\nInternet link to just listen to audio:\n\nhttp://www.twitch.com/gaf_london\n\n\n\nNotice: These lifestreams will be recorded so they can be shared on our website for everyone who missed them. SUMMARY:GAF Lockdown Reading Group discusses: Social Ecology
DESCRIPTION:After our first successful online reading and discussion group meeting\, we are happy to invite you to our second one. Our aim with these meetings is to discuss different subjects each time so it is not necessary to have joined a previous session to participate. Before each meeting we will share a variety of readings of different lengths to give some background information on the subject to be discussed. Participants are invited to pick and choose what they would like to read in preparation. No prior knowledge of any of the subjects is necessary as our aim is to make these events as inclusive and broad as possible. \nFollowing off of our second livestream\, our second reading group discussion will also deal with the topic of social ecology. Social ecology is the recognition of the often overlooked fact that all our ecological problems arise from our deep-seated social problems. \nJoin us as we discuss the questions:\n\nHow does a Democratic Confederation differ from a State? How could a similar political system be realistically implemented in our current climate?\nWhat are the current institutional blockers to the instatement of a direct democracy model? What structures would need to be abolished? What new structures would be needed?\nHow can we cultivate the necessary political education and experience in western societies needed for the functioning of direct democracy models? For example how do we get people to participate meaningfully in neighbourhood assemblies?\nHow is hierarchy and domination reflected in the structure of contemporary cities and states? How can we dismantle these structures and decentralise already existing cities and regions?\nHow can community and ecology relate to each other? How can we decolonise and decommodify our relationship to nature? How can we erase the boundary between civilisation and ‘wilderness’?\n\nReadings:\nBasic readings\n\nTEXT – McGuire\, Emily. SUMMARY:Mayday Revolt Call Out
DESCRIPTION:This Mayday is unlike any previous Maydays. There will be no marches in the streets and no public speeches. Yet\, now more than ever\, we need to show that we are still here\, still angry and still fighting. \nGAF is calling for an autonomous day of action on the 1st of May. We can’t demonstrate\, but that doesn’t mean we can’t revolt. Take action alone or in a small crew. Mutual aid\, solidarity\, and direct action\, all are valid. Keep it serious\, keep it quiet. But above all stay safe. \nIf you want us to share your action (after the event) on our social media\, send us photos and details to greenanticapitalistfront@riseup.net. \nClick on the images below to download printable pdfs of the flyers and shareable images in different languages. (More languages to be added as we can.) \n
