Feminist Fightback Film Club Presents: A story of police violence in France and J’veux du soleil (a documentary on the yellow vests)

28 February, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Feminist Fightback is an activist collective inspired by the politics of a range of anti-capitalist feminist struggles that believes that no single oppression can be challenged in isolation from all other forms of exploitation that intersect with it. They are committed to fighting for a feminist perspective and awareness of gender issues everywhere in the movement – not marginalising ‘women’s rights’ as a separate issue.

This month, in view of the ongoing events in France, Feminist Fightback will be showing two documentaries about the yellow vests in France.

The first is the short “A story of police violence in France” by Ross Domoney which tells the story of three lives affected by police violence in France during the Gilets Jaunes protests. The so-called “sub-lethal” riot control weapons used by French police against protesters have caused dozens of mutilations and serious injuries since the beginning of the movement.

The second is the French 2019 documentary J’veux du soleil (A place in the sun) by Gilles Perret and François Ruffin. J’veux du soleil is a road-movie, where the cinematographers travel the French countryside, meeting and talking to Gilets Jaunes on roundabouts and in their homes. The documentary lets the people speak for themselves and shows us the human stories behind the Gilets Jaunes movement.

The films will be introduced by Ross Domoney, the director of the first one.

As usual there will be a discussion after the film, and drinks and snacks will be available.

Doors open at 7pm. Suggested donation £2 unwaged/ £3 low waged/ £5 higher waged.
